Description

Larix gmelinii, commonly known as Dahurian Larch, is a deciduous conifer native to eastern Siberia and northern Asia. Unlike most conifers, it sheds its needles in the fall, turning a brilliant golden yellow before dropping them. It has a pyramidal shape when young, maturing into a more open, rounded crown. The needles are soft and borne in clusters along the branches. Dahurian Larch is a hardy tree that can withstand extremely cold temperatures. It is often found in harsh, boreal environments. The tree produces small, upright cones. It is used for timber and also for ornamental purposes. It needs well-drained soil. Pruning is best done in late winter or early spring.
