Description

Welwitschia mirabilis is a truly remarkable and bizarre plant endemic to the Namib Desert in southwestern Africa. This plant is one of the oldest and most unique plants on Earth. It consists of only two large, strap-like leaves that grow continuously from a basal meristem throughout its lifespan, along with a central taproot. The leaves become tattered and split over time, giving the plant a distinctive appearance. It produces cones for reproduction. It thrives in extremely arid conditions. The plant requires well-draining, sandy soil, and it needs intense sunlight. Welwitschia mirabilis is a very slow-growing plant and is challenging to cultivate outside of its natural habitat.
