Description

Darlingtonia californica, also known as the cobra lily, is a striking carnivorous plant native to the bogs and seeps of northern California and Oregon. It is easily identified by its unique, cobra-shaped pitcher traps. The pitcher traps have a forked, tongue-like appendage and translucent 'windows' that confuse insects, leading them to their death in the digestive fluids inside. This plant requires specific environmental conditions, including consistently cool temperatures and acidic, nutrient-poor soil. It's best grown with cold running water over the roots and with ample, bright, indirect light. Providing a stream of cold, oxygenated water over its roots is essential for its cultivation.
